Lara Galinsky of Echoing Green answers listener questions about creating meaningful careers. Britt Bravo hosts the show.

Question 1. How can I grow myself as a motivator? I'd like to improve my management and leadership skills, but don't know where to start.

Question 2. How can I transition from my paid jobs to my volunteer jobs where my heart is and stay afloat? I currently volunteer as an advocate for three different health organizations, but work two jobs to support myself and daughter. I would love to find a way to transition from the daily grind of my paid jobs (health-related field) to where my heart is in advocacy work without sacrificing my ability to attain basics (shelter, food, etc.).

Question 1. What tips do you have for recent college graduates who want to work for a nonprofit or social enterprise, but are having trouble finding a job?

Question 2. I have a lot of ideas for social enterprises I want to start, but I never get them off the ground. I get really excited about the idea at first, and then when I hit an obstacle, I run out of steam.  How do I turn my ideas into reality?

At the moment, I am open to a myriad of career opportunities, but am most passionate about the arts, social media, and urban development. Is it better
to accept an unpaid internship in the areas I am most passionate about or a paid internship or job in an area that interests me, but is only moderately related to what I want to do in the future?

I have been a veterinarian for the past 20 years, and it is time to make a change. I feel burnt out and realize the job actually does not suit me very
well. However because this profession is so specialized, I am not quite sure how to go about a radical career change. My passions involve recycling
materials (salvaging, etc), gardening, landscaping, and alternative building. However I have no real skills in these areas, and I am not sure where to
begin. Further, I am not clear how one would launch a career, say, in permaculture, if I were to go through a certification program. I’m a very
hand’s-on kind of person and want to be involved with work that is positive, creative, practical, and attracts other like-minded people.  It may be worth mentioning I am from New Zealand and based currently in the UK.

Question 1: For a college student going into an entry level job, do we need an objective on our resume and if so -- what are some tips for a strong objective?

Question 2: Hi, I'd be grateful of any thoughts. After several successful years in the charity sector I left to co-found my own company. While the company wasn't unethical, I traveled a lot which is against my beliefs in climate change, and similar conflicts with some of my values. The company also ceased trading. In general I don't believe the experience represented me well. I would much rather talk about my old experiences in interviews, not least because I understand and know the issues better. How shall I represent this on my CV and in interviews?

Question 1: I had hibernated for twenty years as a home maker and due to changed circumstances that I found myself in I had to pursue a career to bring up my children all by myself. I was successful in this endeavor and have also completed a eight year stint in the social sector. I now want to set up my own non-profit organization that will create resources for women as well as them help them set goals for themselves and become self reliant. Where can I seek start up funds for such an organization?

Question 2: Does an organization have to be non profit or not-for-profit to be considered a social entrepreneurship project?

After a short break, the Be Bold Podcast returns!

Lara Galinsky of Echoing Green answers listener questions about creating meaningful careers. Britt Bravo hosts the show.

Question 1: I've been a development professional for 3 years (1.5 in membership and 1.5 in grantwriting). I would like to move out of development and into programmatic work but am having no luck. I've tried to highlight the skills I've gained that would be valuable to program work (communication skills, research, project management, etc.) but I'm worried that they're just not perceived as good enough (i.e., related enough) to qualify me. I've heard that most development professionals have a hard time breaking into program work. Is this true? What can I do?

Question 2: How do I overcome hesitation and fear of public speaking?  I feel like this is holding back my career.

Question 1: What professional resources (i.e., legal, marketing, accounting, etc.) are available to take an idea, which has received great reviews from various constituencies that I have discussed it with, from the concept stage to fruition while running a small commercial business with its daily responsibilities? Are there consultants available and, if so, how do they get compensated and how is the concept properly protected?

Question 2: When thinking about my future and what programs of higher level education will best prepare me to make the impact I want to make, I get really caught up in how long it's going to take. I get frustrated thinking about the time it takes, when really all I want to do is start NOW. Move now, and start working now to make people's lives more comfortable, and to help more children survive into adolescent and adult years. However, I know that educational preparation is important to fully realizing my goals. Medical school takes years, and an MD/PhD program can take 8 years or more. I plan to apply for a Fulbright grant for personal research after my senior year to help me get a better idea about what my part should be in the greater scheme of things--but this sets me back a year, and I'm already behind a year because of other exciting opportunities I've taken. What can I do to start making my impact now, while I'm pursuing graduate level education (and will be strapped for cash and therefore unable to contribute financially to programs I support)?
